Introduction

Our team is advancing the state of the art of environmental assessments of information technology. We take a systemic perspective on sustainability of digital media, AI, and IoT.

This means, we don't only study the efficiency of chips and networks but also investigate the conditions that shape this efficiency at a systemic scale and across time. We work across several academic disciplines, including environmental science, computer human interaction (we are part of the Bristol Interaction Group (http://biglab.co.uk/), software engineering, communication and electrical engineering, policy and social science.

We pioneer new methods and tools to assess the carbon footprint of digital media which have been applied by major international media companies (DIMPACT tool - http://www.dimpact.org) used to calculate organisational carbon footprints of digital services used by major digital media companies.

In my teaching, a positive student learning experience is a top priority for me. I draw from my professional experience to create an authentic learning environment that is motivating and effective in preparing our students for their future careers.

I lead the Sustainable Computing unit COMSM0134 and teach software engineering (https://bris.ac.uk/software-engineering) where our students build prototypes for a wide set of “clients”, including local not-for-profit organisations from Bristol, all the way to international corporations; and is inviting new project proposals.

I am the Employability Lead for Computer Science at the University of Bristol, and Faculty of Engineering Deputy Faculty Research Ethics Officer.
