Dan Bennett

Lecturer in Human-Computer Interaction.

My work is associated with BIG::Diverse, BIG::Everyday & BIG::Health. My research themes and interests include ux, user experience, behavioural regulation, complexity, embodiment, human-centred data science, identity and the self, psychology, reflective interaction & well-being.

My research connects the three strands of my academic background — philosophy, computer science, and cognitive science. I have two main lines of interest:

  • How technologies impact human autonomy, for example how the technologies of the attention economy undermine behavioural regulation. I am interested in how technologies can be used to foster user competencies to help navigate these challenges. I am also interested in understanding how data can be used to drive more sustainable, reflective patterns of engagement, grounded in psychosocial needs.
  • How temporal patterns in interaction behaviour can help us understand peoples' experiences with games and everyday technologies. How we could use these patterns to adapt interfaces to user needs.

If you are interested in working with me as a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher then please get in touch. It's also nice to hear from people who are interested in my research or want to share their own interesting research.
