Dan Bennett

Lecturer in Computer Science.

My work is associated with BIG::Diverse, BIG::Everyday & BIG::Health. My research themes and interests include ux, complexity, enactivism, phenomenology, psychology & well-being.

In academic language, I am interested in how we can bridge between humanistic and computational approaches to technology design. I am interested in how we can formalise and operationalise messy ideas related to meaning, value, well-being, so that these issues can be better accommodated in the design of technologies. In particular I am interested in human autonomy and agency, and how these are impacted or supported by technologies.

For me this isn't an either/or thing: it isn't a choice between scientific operationalisations or humanistic understandings. I think we need both approaches, and much of my research is about working out how we get these different perspectives to work well together.
